CTOnews.com, November 2 (Xinhua)-- in order to further improve the country's artificial intelligence capabilities, the British government has announced that investment in artificial intelligence research resources has tripled from 100 million pounds (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 890 million yuan) announced in March 2023 to 300 million pounds (currently about 2.67 billion yuan).

According to reports, the UK plans to connect two new supercomputers with a capacity more than 30 times that of Britain's largest public artificial intelligence computing tool. The machines will be up and running in the summer of 2024 and will help researchers analyze advanced artificial intelligence models to test safety features and drive breakthroughs in drug discovery and clean energy.

The University of Bristol announced in September that it will receive 225 million pounds (currently about 2.002 billion yuan) in funding for the Isambard artificial intelligence computer under construction, which is 10 times faster than the fastest computer in the UK.

Us IT giant Hewlett Packard Enterprise will help build the computer, with the goal of eventually connecting it to a newly announced supercomputer called Dawn at Cambridge University. The latter, made by Dell and British company StackPC, will be powered by more than 1000 Intel chips that use water-cooled technology to reduce power consumption and are expected to start running within the next two months.

British Prime Minister Sunak announced last month that he plans to set up the world's first AI Security Institute, aimed at promoting global awareness of related technological security, CTOnews.com reported earlier.

In his speech, Sunak said the soon-to-be-established institute would promote the world's awareness of AI security and would carefully study, evaluate and test new AI technologies in order to understand the capabilities of each new model and explore all risks from "prejudice and misleading" to the "most extreme risks" of society.

"AI can make it easier to make chemical or biological weapons, but the technology can also be used by criminals," Sunak said. "in the most unlikely but extreme cases, humans may even get completely out of control in front of AI through AI, sometimes called super intelligence."
