CTOnews.com, Nov. 2 (Xinhua)-- astronomers believe that there may be underground oceans on Ganymede, a moon of Jupiter, through an in-depth study of observational data from Ganymede.

Astronomers analyzed data collected during Juno's flyby of Ganymede in July 2021, using Juno's Jupiter Infrared Aurora Mapping (JIRAM) spectrometer.

The newly published research paper shows that the observation data sent back by Juno show that hydrated sodium chloride, ammonium chloride, sodium bicarbonate and even fatty aldehydes have been detected.

The researchers believe that the presence of these organic compounds suggests that there may be hydrothermal activity (hydrothermal activity) in the depths of Ganymede.

In their paper, the authors explain that extensive water-rock interactions may lead to this activity, which is consistent with the presence of sodium salts within Ganymede, and can be used as an independent indicator of water alteration, but other possibilities are not ruled out. causing these organic compounds to appear on Ganymede's surface.
