The entertainment giant announced on Wednesday that it is "expected to pay" $8.61 billion (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 63.025 billion yuan) for Comcast's 33% stake in Hulu, giving Disney full ownership of Hulu.

But Disney may end up paying more than that. Both Disney and Comcast agreed to conduct an evaluation process to determine the fair value of Hulu on September 30. If Comcast's shares are determined to be "above the guaranteed minimum value", Disney will have to pay the difference to Comcast.

Disney said the timing of the evaluation process was "uncertain" but was expected to be completed sometime next year. It all stems from a deal between Disney and Comcast to buy its 1/3 stake in Hulu in 2019. The deal was originally scheduled for 2024, but Comcast and Disney agreed to advance the date to September 30.

At the time, the two companies agreed to a minimum valuation of $27.5 billion for Hulu. "that's just an assumption we chose five years ago," Bryan Roberts, Comcast's chief executive, said at an investor conference in September. "the company is worth much more today than it was then."

The number of subscribers to Hulu remained virtually unchanged last quarter, and Disney announced an increase in the price of all its streaming services and hinted at a crackdown on password sharing. In October, the price of Hulu's ad-free service rose from $14.99 to $17.99 per month, while the price of Hulu with a live TV service rose from $68.99 to $75.99 per month.
