Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

Since the color machine was born in the 1950s, the technology has changed several times, from the earliest CRT technology, to the advent of LCD and DLP technology in 1980s and 1990s, and the entry of LCoS technology, the technology is becoming more and more mature. After decades of development, DLP and LCD occupy the mainstream position in the market. However, even many people in the industry do not understand their core principles and their respective characteristics. Let's discuss it in this article.

Brief introduction of LCD and DLP Technology

LCD and DLP are two completely different micro-display imaging technologies, and most people may ask the obvious question, "which is better," before they understand the difference? . The answer is simple-from a technical point of view, neither is better than the other. They all have advantages over the other, and they all have their own limitations. At the same time, LCD and DLP technologies have been developing and evolving over the years, with a great improvement compared to before. Next, let's take a brief look at their core features and how they work.

LCD technology

The LCD machine contains three independent LCD glass panels, which are the red, green and blue components of the video signal. Each LCD panel contains tens of thousands of liquid crystals that can be configured to open, close or partially close different positions to allow light to pass through. Each individual liquid crystal essentially operates like a shutter or shutter, representing a single pixel. When red, green and blue pass through different LCD panels, the liquid crystal opens and closes instantly based on how much each color of the pixel needs at that time. This behavior modulates the light to produce an image projected onto the screen.

Our common machines, especially engineering machines, generally use the 3LCD mark, which is the image of the factory's commercial 3LCD as a marketing promotion, and the number 3 represents three LCD panels. However, there are also models on the market that use a LCD panel, also known as LCD, which is easy to be confused. Models with one LCD panel are generally of low brightness and are suitable for entry-level home entertainment scenes.

DLP technology

DLP is a technology developed by American Texas Instruments. DLP chip is a reflective surface composed of tens of thousands of microlenses. Each microlens represents a single pixel. In a DLP machine, light from the light source is directed to the surface of the DLP chip, and the lens changes the slope back and forth, either reflecting the light onto the lens path to turn on the pixel, or leaving the light path to turn off the pixel.

To define color, you need to use a color wheel that contains red, green, and blue filters. The color wheel rotates on the light path between the light bulb and the DLP chip, so that the color of the light projected on the chip changes constantly between red, green and blue. Based on how many colors each pixel needs at a given time, the microlens reflects or enters the lens path in real time, resulting in an image projected onto the screen. In the DLP machine for high-end professional applications, three separate DLP chips are used, each of which corresponds to red, green and blue channels respectively. This is the three-chip DLP technology, which can achieve purer and accurate colors, and of course the cost and volume are also greatly increased.

Focus on the advantages of DLP in the engineering field

After understanding the principles of LCD and DLP technology, we still need to identify the areas of application before we can further explore their technical strengths and weaknesses. In this article, we mainly focus on the professional level of systems engineering, that is, the machine for exhibition and stage performance. So, what kind of demand do users have for computers in these areas?

Engineering projects generally need large-size pictures, which requires not only high brightness, but also high resolution to ensure exquisite pictures, and to have better multi-picture consistency when multiple stitches are merged. The installation environment of the project is not controllable, so the stable operation ability of the machine is needed. Engineering projects generally have to work continuously for a long time, so they prefer machines with long-lasting picture quality and stable operation.

From the requirements of the above projects, DLP has certain advantages over LCD.

Display effect level: the micromirror used by DLP technology has smaller pixel gap and more compact arrangement than LCD, so DLP technology has higher pixel filling number, smoother picture quality and higher original resolution. But also put an end to the screen door effect of LCD technology (Screen).

Door Effect), that is, when you look closely, you can see that there are thin lines or boundaries around the pixels.

Dustproof airtight layer: DLP technology uses sealed DMD chips, the cooling process is completed on the back of each imager, and will not hinder the optical path. This means that DLP technology is not affected by cooling air and dust particles. LCD technology is sensitive to dust accumulation and requires regular replacement or cleaning of air filters.

Lasting picture quality: because the LCD panel is extremely sensitive to light, the brightness and color uniformity will be reduced after long-term use, affecting the quality. On the other hand, DLP uses micro-mechanical structure, which will not change or fade with time, so it can maintain image uniformity, color accuracy and light output for a long time.

Barco focuses on DLP technology products

Patan is a leading innovator in technological development and has always been a leader in the field of visualization. At present, Barco's engineering machine covers DLP and LCD technology, giving full play to the advantages of various technologies to provide more complete services for different users. In terms of product line, Barco focuses on the DLP lineup. Based on the core technology advantages of DLP, Barco launches advanced models that achieve higher brightness and smaller size through self-developed technology and exclusive design, providing product support for personalized and customized scenes.

Barco G series, brightness covering 6000-23750 lumens, with WUXGA resolution, compact shape.

F-Series brightness ranges from 3800 to 13000 lumens, resolution covers 4K, WQXGA and WUXGA, ruggedness and durability, and supports professional special lenses.

The UDM series is the industry benchmark 3DLP lightweight and compact model, with brightness from 15000 to 30000 lumens, resolution of 4K and WUXGA, and more flexible maintenance with modular design.

The UDX series is a high-brightness 3DLP machine developed for large venues and events, with a brightness of 25000-45000 lumens and a resolution of 4K, WUXGA and UXGA, using red and blue laser light sources.

The XDM series is a 3DLP machine with high brightness, original 4K resolution and RGB tricolor pure laser source, with a brightness of 23500 lumens, suitable for theme parks and museums.

The XDL series is a high-brightness RGB laser 3DLP machine with a 4K resolution and a brightness of 30000-75000 lumens.

The IQ series adopts 3LCD technology and laser light source, with a brightness of 6000-10000 lumens, a solid structure and reliable performance, expanding the Barco product lineup and providing users with more choices.

Both DLP and LCD have key advantages. There are also limitations that users need to know. In the field of engineering, DLP technology has better image quality and performance, as well as significant advantages in the number of products, which makes DLP technology can cover more subdivided scenes and requirements, and provide higher value services for the visual presentation of engineering projects.
