CTOnews.com Microsoft is offering a behind-the-scenes upgrade for developers who want to develop Xbox console media apps, and today the company announced that it has added WebView2 support for Xbox app development.

Microsoft said in a blog post that this new development feature "has been a hot request from developers of our WebView2 and Xbox media apps." Previously, Xbox Media apps only supported the older EdgeHTML WebView platform. Microsoft said the move to the newer WebView2, a Chromium-based Edge browser, will enable "Xbox app developers to use modern Web APIs in their apps," while also providing better overall performance for those apps.

CTOnews.com notes that Microsoft first provided universal support for WebView2 for Win32 C / C++ app development in 2020, based on its Chromium Edge browser, and adding this support to Microsoft's Xbox console may lead to more apps being ported to the platform.

In fact, there's already an Xbox app that uses WebView tools, and that's the Starz streaming service app.

Microsoft also said that WebView2 tools can also support making simple games.
