CTOnews.com Microsoft plans to end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, and the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) has launched a petition to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella calling on the company to reconsider the move.

The U.S. Public Interest Research Group believes that of the 1 billion devices currently using Windows 10, more than 400 million devices do not meet the upgrade requirements of Windows 11.

With more than 400 million devices losing Microsoft support after the Windows 10 lifecycle ends, Microsoft should consider 'ending the Windows 10 lifecycle' and continuing to provide security updates to users who cannot upgrade to Windows 11, both for Microsoft's financial benefit and to protect the global environment.

Lucas Rockett Gutterman, director of activities at the U.S. Public Interest Research Organization, said Microsoft had expanded support for older operating systems in the past, such as Windows XP, where users received security updates for up to 13 years, so it was "possible" for Microsoft to extend Windows 10 support.

According to CTOnews.com previously reported, according to StatCounter's October 2023 global Windows operating system data, Windows 10 has the largest market share, accounting for about 70.88% of desktop computers. Windows 11 is the second most popular version with a market share of 24.89%. Windows 7 still has a market share of 2.9%. Windows 8.1 has about 0.57% market share, Windows 8 has about 0.34% market share, and Windows XP has about 0.3% market share.

Microsoft Windows 10 support period is only two years left, still accounting for nearly 71% share
