CTOnews.com Shane Legg, co-founder of Google's DeepMind AI Lab, said in a recent interview that he still believes researchers have a 50 percent chance of achieving human-level artificial intelligence (AGI) by 2028. This prediction was announced publicly on his blog in late 2011, when he predicted the development trend of artificial intelligence in the coming decades.

PexelsLegg said he began following AGI in 2001 when he read Ray Kurzweil, another Google AI leader,'s book The Age of Spiritual Machines, which predicted the future of superhuman intelligence. Legg says he believes in two important ideas in the book: that computing power will grow exponentially for at least a few decades, and that the amount of data in the world will grow exponentially for at least a few decades. Combined with technological trends at the time, such as deep learning, Legg believes AGI is possible in the next few decades, as long as "nothing crazy happens, like nuclear war."

CTOnews.com notes that when asked where we are on the road to AGI at the moment, Legg said he believes computing power has reached the level needed to achieve AGI, and that the "first unlocking step" will be to "start training models on data scales beyond what humans can experience in a lifetime," something he believes the AI industry is ready for.

Legg, however, reiterated his personal stance that he only believes there is a 50 percent chance that researchers will achieve AGI by the end of the decade."I think it's entirely possible," he said,"but I wouldn't be surprised if it hasn't happened by then. "
