CTOnews.com, October 31 (Xinhua) according to the Economic Daily, TSMC's plant in Kumamoto, Japan has made significant progress and has sent and recruited more than 1000 people, and plans to start mass production in 2024.

The report said that expatriate engineers, accompanied by their families, arrived in Japan in August this year, and that locally recruited engineers had completed training and were deployed to the Kumamoto plant to prepare for production in 2024.

The report says expatriates and local recruits currently employ more than 1000 people at TSMC's Kumamoto plant in Japan, and officials plan to announce more during the third-quarter earnings call.

CTOnews.com previously reported that TSMC's Japanese plant, which mainly produces 12 nm and 22 nm process products, has employed 800 people locally. The plant began to install the equipment this month, and if all goes according to plan, mass production is expected by the end of 2024.

TSMC Kumamoto factory has received strong support from the Japanese government, Sony Semiconductor Solutions, Denso and other partners. The total capital expenditure of the plant is $8.6 billion, and Japan's Ministry of economy, Trade and Industry approved a subsidy of 476 billion yen ($3.5 billion) in June, accounting for about 40 per cent of Japan's total subsidies.

TSMC is also interested in building a second semiconductor plant in Japan, and the Japanese government is considering providing subsidies of up to 900 billion yen (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 44.1 billion yuan) to the second plant.
