CTOnews.com, Oct. 30-Google unveiled a technology called Audio plethysmo graphy (APG) in MobiCom2023 last week, which uses active noise reduction headphones to detect health data such as blood pressure, heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV).
At present, common wearable devices on the market that can measure heart health mainly use "photoelectric plethysmography (Photo plethysmo gram,PPG)" technology, but such methods are affected by the user's skin color, are more expensive, consume more power, and increase the weight of the device itself.
Previously, some manufacturers have developed headphones to detect heart rate. This technology mainly uses microphones to detect heartbeats smaller than 50Hz, but this scheme is easy to be disturbed by external ambient sounds.
The technology currently launched by Google uses active noise reduction headphones to detect heart rate. Google uses coherent detection (coherent detection) to analyze APG waveforms and finds that the final APG waveforms are very similar to PPG waveforms, which means that blood pressure information can be provided from blood pressure waveforms.
▲ source Google uses a variety of techniques to measure the frequency of "detecting the best heartbeat waveform and heart rhythm variation", between 30 and 32 kHz.
▲ image source Google CTOnews.com found that Google researchers modified noise reduction headphones on the market and used Polar ECG blood pressure measurement wristbands as a control group.
The researchers recruited 153 subjects for two tests, and the results showed that the APG technique had a median absolute error of 3.21% and 2.7% for heart rate and heart rate variability, respectively, so the accuracy was stable. This shows that the accuracy of APG detection is not affected by the skin color of the subjects like PPG detection.
As Google's research is more accurate and cheaper than traditional PPG technology, foreign media 9to5Google believes that the relevant technology may be carried in Google's next-generation Pixel Buds.
