Google responded to the issue in more detail on Sunday night, including ongoing repair work and possible data recovery plans.

Depending on the device, this problem may prevent the primary user from accessing the media storage space. This problem may also cause the device to restart and display the message "restore factory settings". If this information is accepted, data that is not backed up may be lost; if this information is rejected, the device will restart repeatedly and display the message "Pixel is starting".

Google said the storage problem affected "Pixel 6 and newer" devices, which "have received Android 14 updates and have set up multiple user accounts (in addition to the primary user)". Multiple user accounts here include "users, visitors, restricted profiles and child users", but do not include multiple Google accounts logged in "in the primary user or work profile".

Google has launched a Google Play system update to "help prevent this problem from being triggered on other devices". To install this update, open Settings > Security and Privacy > system and updates > Google Play system updates.

CTOnews.com noted that for users who currently "do not have access to media storage space", Google is developing a system update that "will fix this problem and restore access to media files without the need to restore factory settings".

Google also said it was "working on ways to recover some data" for devices in the "Pixel is starting" restart cycle.

For all other users, including those that have restored factory settings, Google recommends avoiding "creating or logging in to a second user on the device until the OTA update is available."
