CTOnews.com, October 30 (Xinhua)-- Google announced in its developer blog last week that Credential Manager (credential Manager) will be officially opened on November 1, a new Android-specific API for storing user names and password combinations, Passkey and other credentials. Credential Manager launched a developer preview a few months ago, which integrates Passkey biometric authentication, traditional passwords and federated identity login in Android phones into one platform.

This will allow the application to provide better authentication support in Android 14, and using the credential manager, the application can easily allow users to log in biometrically through Passkey. This means that users do not have to remember login information for a more seamless login experience. Third-party password managers, such as 1Password, can also integrate the API to provide a smoother experience when using alternatives to Google password Manager.

Google wrote in another blog post last week that it is scrapping several authentication API so that developers only need to call the credential Manager to authenticate users. Hopefully this will make things easier and more likely to be used by third-party applications.

What is Passkey? Passkey can use the device's own authentication method to replace the traditional password, and users can log in to various services through Face ID on iPhone, fingerprint sensor on Android phone or Windows Hello on PC.

Passkey is based on WebAuthn (or Web authentication) technology, and when you create a Passkey, two different Passkey are generated: one stored by a website or service, and the other stored by a device used to authenticate.

If the Passkey is stored on the device, what if it is damaged or lost? Because Passkey can be used across multiple devices, backups may be available. Many services that support Passkey also re-authenticate their mobile phone numbers or email addresses, or they can also use hardware secure Passkey.

CTOnews.com notes that Passkey is already supported in Apple and Google password safes.
