Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com A new report released by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) shows that digital piracy levels rose in 2022, reversing previous year-on-year declines.
Pexels 'report, titled "EU Online Copyright Infringement, Films, Music, Publications, Software and TV, 2017-2022," points out that the trend of digital piracy has reversed since 2021 and increased by 3.3% in 2022. This is the third EUIPO study on the evolution of online copyright infringement in EU member states and the UK. The study analyzed the number of times people accessed pirated movies, TV, music, software and publications between January 2017 and December 2022, and the number of times each internet user accessed illegal content per month was used as an indicator of the level of piracy.
Piracy of TV shows, TV series, movies and comic book publications is the main reason for the rise in digital piracy, the report said. TV piracy accounted for nearly half (48%) of illegal visits to websites in the EU in 2022, with TV shows and series and on-demand movies most affected by piracy, followed by anime (series and movies) and live broadcasts of sporting events and professional sports channels. Publications are the second most affected genre after TV and have also increased since January 2021, with comic books being the most popular genre in this category, followed by audio books and ebooks. The study also analyzed illegal access to live sports for the first time, with this type of piracy on the rise in 2021 and 2022, up 30 percent in just one year. In some countries, such as France and Spain, this type of content accounts for more than a third (34%) of all illegal visits. In May 2023, the European Commission adopted a recommendation on combating online piracy of sporting events and other live events, aimed at preventing unauthorized broadcasting of these events. EUIPO is working with the European Commission and stakeholders to monitor the impact of this recommendation.
According to research, streaming has become the most popular way to access illegal TV content-58% of EU piracy is via streaming and 32% via download.
CTOnews.com notes that the report also states that by the end of 2022, each internet user in the EU visits websites offering infringing content about 10 times per month on average. There are significant differences among member states, with the highest piracy rates in Estonia and Latvia, averaging close to 25 visits per user per month, and the lowest in Germany, Italy and Poland, averaging about 7.5 visits per user per month.
Christian Archambeau, Executive Director of EUIPO, said: "Copyright infringement in the digital age remains a very serious problem and poses a direct threat to Europe's creative industries. New research shows that there is still a lot of work to be done to combat piracy. Because piracy evolves with technology, stopping it is a complex business. That's why understanding the mechanisms behind piracy is crucial to developing effective policies and measures to reduce piracy. "
