CTOnews.com, October 29 (Xinhua)-- BlockVerse is a "Minecraft" clone game developed for Meta Quest headsets that features mixed reality, not just virtual reality. The default mixed reality perspective presents part of the game world as a miniature model suspended in front of the player, but the game also supports full-size mixed reality mode.

To use full-size mixed reality mode, players need a warehouse or flat outdoor space. It is best to enable developer mode at the same time to turn off the security boundary function shown in the header (normally, the maximum space only supports 15x15 meters).

Tubing Internet celebrity Brandon Ballinger (AwakenToast) tried this model with his Quest 3, showing us the huge and untapped potential of outdoor mixed reality games.

Ballinger first dug a virtual hole in the physical ground and marveled at the "sense of depth" he felt as he looked down. Throughout the video, he can be seen carefully avoiding falling into the virtual holes he has dug and walking around them, despite the fact that they do not exist.

He went on to build a virtual house that could stay where he was even as he walked around the meadow, indicating that the Quest 3 location tracking system barely drifted even on this scale.

When he added ceilings to the house, it was clear how blurred the line was between virtual reality and mixed reality. It's really wonderful to see the only view of the real world through the empty door.

CTOnews.com noted that Quest 3 currently lacks dynamic occlusion (which is still in the experimental stage and cannot be used in applications), and can be seen in the video when Ballinger walks to the front of the tree, but the virtual object is still rendered in front of the tree. To make matters more incongruous, when he shows up the children at the end of the video, they are supposed to be in his virtual house, but they can only be seen through the door, as if half of his body is buried in the ground.

There may soon be a wave of outdoor mixed reality games where people can take their heads to the park to play games and create works, and we seem to be not far from the Pokemon GO moment.
