Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Alejandro86 for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) the development of electric vehicles in Japan has been hampered by a serious lack of charging infrastructure, according to Enechange Ltd. Japan has an average of only one charging post per 4000 people, compared with 1800 in Europe, the United States and China, with 500 in Europe, 600 in the United States and 1800 in China.

In a recent survey conducted by Deloitte, Japanese consumers expressed higher concerns about the popularity of charging piles for electric vehicles than in any other country, with about 40 per cent of respondents worried about inadequate charging infrastructure. To address this problem, the Japanese government has doubled its target to build 300000 charging stations for electric vehicles nationwide by 2030 and to provide operators with a huge subsidy of 17.5 billion yen (CTOnews.com Note: about 856 million yuan) this fiscal year.

Japanese automakers are also taking steps to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles. Honda plans to phase out sales of gasoline-powered cars by 2040, while Nissan plans to launch 27 electrified models by 2030, including 19 electric vehicles. Toyota has also set an ambitious sales target of selling 1.5 million pure electric vehicles by 2026 and 3.5 million by 2030.

The lack of charging infrastructure in Japan is partly due to the challenge of renovating old buildings because the consent of residents is required to install charging piles in the apartment complex. However, newly developed projects are actively adding charging infrastructure to attract potential electric car owners.
