CTOnews.com Tesla CEO Elon Musk tried to hide the flight path of his private jet through a free FAA program. The program allows private jets to use temporary aircraft registration numbers to avoid detection by commercial websites or aircraft tracking accounts on social media.

However, according to JetSpy, an aircraft tracking company, Musk has not used the FAA's stealth program since August 20, 2022. He first used the program on January 25, 2022, and the last time the temporary aircraft registration number was used only once, it was restored to its original number.

JetSpy believes this may be because stealth programs are too cumbersome, require a lot of paperwork, and have to reapply once exposed. Moreover, stealth programs don't completely block other ways to identify private aircraft.

Forbes reports that in addition to Musk, there are other celebrities who have used the FAA's stealth program to cover the whereabouts of their private jets, including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and singer Taylor Swift. The FAA says 390 replacement ID codes have been issued since the program was launched in 2019. But the FAA also acknowledged that the program is not a "panacea" to prevent aircraft tracking.

CTOnews.com notes that Musk offered a college student $5000 in 2021 to close his Twitter account tracking his private jet.
