CTOnews.com, October 27, Xu Xiulan, chairman of Global Wafer Holdings (GlobalWafers), the world's third largest silicon wafer manufacturer, said that the company has overcome the technical difficulties of mass production of silicon carbide (SiC) wafers and has pushed SiC wafers to 8 inches, keeping pace with international manufacturers.

Xu Xiulan estimates that small shipments of 8-inch SiC products will begin in the fourth quarter of 2024, which will grow significantly in 2025 and account for more than 6-inch wafers by 2026.

Global wafers say that the yield of 8-inch wafers has been well controlled, which has exceeded 50%, and there is room for further improvement, and relevant samples will be delivered in the first half of next year.

CTOnews.com learned from the report that Xu Xiulan said that customers want Global Wafer to teach the transition from 6-inch to 8-inch SiC mass production, mainly from the automotive industry.

Global wafers have designed and developed a special silicon carbide crystal growth furnace (Crystal Growth Furnace), which enhances material quality control and reduces crystal growth costs.

The high hardness and brittleness of SiC make wafer processing challenging, but the global wafer adopts higher process accuracy and more efficient wafer processing methods to realize ultra-thin SiC wafer processing.
