The results show that more and more people are tracking their sleep, but the quality of their sleep is declining.

The global average length of sleep fell from 7 hours and 3 minutes to 6 hours and 59 minutes, slightly below the seven-hour standard recommended by the National Sleep Foundation, the study found. At the same time, the awake time during sleep also increased, resulting in a decline in sleep efficiency, which refers to the ratio of the actual sleep time to the total time spent in bed each night. Samsung found that these sleep trends are widespread both demographically and geographically. Over the past two years, men and women, people of all ages and regions have experienced a decline in sleep duration and efficiency.

Sleep debt refers to the difference caused by irregular sleep, measured by the ratio of sleep hours on weekdays to weekends. Studies have shown that sleeping more on weekends than on weekdays, that is, sleep debt, can affect sleep quality. According to Samsung, healthy users in their 20s have almost twice as much sleep debt as those in their 70s.

The sleep counseling function on Samsung's health platform assigns an animal symbol to users based on sleep data accumulated for at least seven days. Each animal symbol represents different sleep habits and patterns, including sleep time, sleep consistency and waking time. Samsung found that most Samsung healthy users are "nervous penguins", meaning they maintain a healthy circadian rhythm during sleep, but are often interrupted. The study also found that older healthy users tend to be "cautious deer" who sleep shorter and stay awake longer. People in their 20s are more likely to be "sensitive hedgehogs" and "sun-averse moles" because they show higher sleep inconsistencies.

Through the research, Samsung also found that users can get better sleep quality within two months after using the sleep counseling function in Samsung Health platform. "exhausted Shark" is the type of user that records the lowest sleep quality and benefits the most after using sleep counseling.
