Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, October 26 (Xinhua) according to the latest survey report released by market research firm Counterpoint Research, due to weak demand, inventory adjustment and the decrease in the number of cameras per smartphone, global shipments of CMOS image sensors (CIS) in the first half of 2023 were 2 billion, down 14% from the same period last year.
Alicia Kong, a research analyst at the agency, said:
Persistent inflationary pressures and a challenging macroeconomic environment have affected consumer confidence and led to lower-than-expected smartphone shipments.
The average number of cameras per smartphone also fell to 3.8 in the first half of 2023, down from 3.9 in the second half of 2022.
In terms of rear cameras, the share of smartphones equipped with dual-camera and three-camera solutions is increasing, crowding out phones with four-camera solutions.
Chinese Android OEM manufacturers, in particular, have been actively reducing the number of cameras in order to save cost or space. The fusion of camera, processing unit and algorithm is the core of the improvement of camera performance and image quality.
From the supplier's point of view, Deputy Director Ethan Qi said:
Sony was the only supplier with year-on-year growth in CIS shipments in the first half of 2023, thanks to Apple's strong iPhone performance and resilience during the market downturn. Samsung and Howie experienced year-on-year declines to varying degrees due to weak sales in the Android sector and channel inventory adjustments.
Although the end market remains weak, we expect smartphone OEMs to replenish inventory from the third quarter to prepare for the launch of new models and ease inventory levels.
However, due to macro headwinds, the recovery will be quite modest compared with the first half of the year. Global smartphone CIS shipments are expected to be 4.2 billion units in 2023, down 10% from the same period last year.
