Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Xiao Zhan for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, October 25, according to Omdia official account, Omdia today released "Notebook and tablet display panels and Intelligence Services", arguing that inventory pressures in the first half of 2023 led to weaker-than-expected demand for PCs in the post-epidemic period.

CTOnews.com learned from the Omdia report that global shipments of laptop display panels are expected to be 1.885 billion pieces in 2023, down 13% from the same period last year and the second consecutive year of decline since 2021.

Omdia said that although inventory problems have gradually eased since the second half of 2023, the market demand for personal computers is expected to remain weak this year. The biggest problem in the current PC market is the inability to see demand in the end market, so most PC brands have adopted a conservative panel procurement strategy in 2023 to avoid increasing inventory risk again.

Panel manufacturers have also responded to the depressed forecasts of PC brands by strictly controlling production line capacity utilization in 2023 in order to stabilize laptop display panel prices.

Lin Xiaoru, senior chief analyst at ▲ Picture Source OmdiaOmdia, said: "in the face of weak demand in the PC market in 2023, conservative product planning is the strategy that needs to be adopted."

All PC brands conduct internal product line audits to evaluate profits and optimize the product line, while minimizing the number of new model projects this year, thereby improving the financial structure. In addition, there will be more demand for low-cost models than high-end models in 2023.

Although the current demand for personal computers is showing a downward trend, the demand for notebook display panels with low-cost models that still use TN technology has increased sharply, mainly using two low-cost models with resolution of 1366x1768 (HD) and 1920x1080 (FHD).

The share of TN technology in notebook display panels remained stable at 25 per cent in 2023, down only slightly from the previous year. Although notebook display panel manufacturers have shifted their production capacity from TN to IPS, TN panels still account for more than 20 per cent of notebook display panel technology in recent years due to the weakness of the PC market in the short term.

According to Omdia, laptop display panel makers will continue to focus on low-cost areas in 2023 and 2024, and the penetration of IPS laptop display panels will be limited, which will affect their share growth, rising from 72 per cent to 73 per cent in a year.

Omdia also believes that the 1366x1768 (HD) resolution notebook display panel may be phased out. After 2024, models that use TN or IPS technology will use 1920x1080 (FHD) and higher resolution, while the brightness of the basic notebook display panel may also increase from the current 250Nit to 300Nit.

These changes will also benefit the use of 16:10 aspect ratio display panels and may increase their market share in 2024. Manufacturers are also looking for opportunities to improve profit margins and upgrade their low-end PCs in the future.
