Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com October 25, Google Chrome browser developer Dale Curtis said in an email on Google Groups yesterday that developers plan to remove support for Theora video codecs in desktop Chrome browsers.

The icon of the ▲ Theora project, CTOnews.com, has been queried that Theora is a free and open lossy video compression format developed by the Xiph.Org Foundation. The video codec was released to the public on November 3, 2008, mainly for online audio and video purposes.

Dale Curtis said that the usage of the Theora video codec is so low that support is no longer needed for most users, and considering that the codec itself is prone to various errors, it was finally decided to remove the Theora video codec.

The complete list of reasons is as follows:

Theora has a low utilization rate

A surge in zero-day attacks on media codecs

Utilization in the UK has fallen below measurable levels

Before the decline in usage, the Chrome team manually checked some sites and found that they had mistakenly chosen Theora over more modern codecs such as VP9.

Chrome browsers on Safari and Android platforms have never supported Theora.

Dale Curtis, an email released by ▲ source Dale Curtis, claims that developers will still provide ogv.js polyfill for websites that need Theora support, and will not remove support for ogg containers.

Developers plan to remove support for Theora in M120 first.

In the meantime, users in need can reactivate Theora support through chrome://flags/#theora-video-codec.

The specific Chrome browser version (tentative) schedule is as follows:

October 23, 2023: start the 50 canary development experiment

November 1 to November 6, 2023: start the 50 take 50 Beta experiment

December 6, 2023: start 1% stable experiment

January 8, 2024: start 50% stable experiment

January 16, 2024: launched at 100%

February 2024: delete code and chrome://flag in M123

March 2024: Chrome 123 will be upgraded to a stable version.
