CTOnews.com, October 25 (Xinhua)-- at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show, which opened today, Mazda unveiled a concept car called Iconic SP, which uses extended range technology driven by rotor engines and motors.

CTOnews.com noted that Iconic SP's powertrain is based on the recently launched MX-30 R-EV crossover car, which uses add-on technology and uses a dual-rotor engine as a generator to charge the 17.8kWh battery. Mazda did not release the full specifications of the concept car, but said it had a power output of 370 horsepower, about twice as much as the most powerful version of the MX-5. However, it is not clear whether this figure refers to the output of the electric part or the total output of the rotor engine.

Mazda says the rotor engine has its advantages as an extension of the electric sports car because it can be configured in a variety of layouts to achieve optimal weight distribution and space utilization. In this concept car, the rotor engine is placed in the middle of the body, helping to reduce the center of gravity while extending the front hood longer, creating a rear cockpit layout.

This concept car has a length of 4180mm, wide 1850mm, high 1150mm, wheelbase of 2590mm, weight of 1450 kg and size between MX-5 and RX-7. It is unclear whether the car can hold more than two passengers, and Mazda may place the battery vertically behind the driver to reduce the body height and center of gravity, thus maintaining the agile driving characteristics of the MX-5.

As can be seen from the pictures inside the cockpit, this electric version of the MX-5 pays great attention to handling performance. The digital dashboard shows the g value and a map of the Monaco Grand Prix track, suggesting that the Vision SP is designed for running the track and driving fun. There is also a "shift pick" behind the steering wheel, which is used to adjust kinetic energy recovery. Functions such as active aerodynamics kit, suspension setup and ejection start can be controlled on the touch screen, while other visible features include a 360-degree camera and ultrasonic sensor in the front grille, which may be used for adaptive cruise control.

The cockpit is decorated with micro suede leather and Mazda's plant-based biological fabrics, reflecting the company's ambitious commitment to being completely carbon neutral by 2050. As part of this sustainable vision, Mazda has always stressed that engines still have room for survival in the future, as long as they use carbon-neutral energy such as synthetic fuels or hydrogen, rather than gasoline or diesel.

When Mazda's new CEO, Masahiro Mori, unveiled the concept car in Tokyo in March this year, he said: "We love MX-5, and the world loves MX-5. We are determined to maintain the driving fun represented by MX-5 in the electrified age, and Mazda Iconic SP, with its dual-rotor engine generator-EV power system, is our dream-a dream that we will strive to achieve. Mazda will always provide vehicles that make people feel that cars are pure happiness and an integral part of life. "

However, Mr Mori did not say whether he would launch a mass-production version of the concept car. When he took office in March, Mazda announced a huge electrification plan to launch new hybrid and all-electric models by 2027, and then electrify all models from 2028. The company has not yet said when it will launch an electrified version of the MX-5, but has upgraded the current MX-5 to comply with upcoming safety regulations and is expected to continue selling it until at least 2026.
