CTOnews.com, October 25, the 2023 Qualcomm Summit now officially begins. Qualcomm's first product is the new Snapdragon X platform designed for PC products, and its flagship product is named Snapdragon X Elite.

Snapdragon X Elite uses custom Oryon CPU, based on 4nm technology, uses 12 3.8GHz cores, supports dual-core Rui frequency to 4.3GHz, memory bandwidth 136GB/s, and total cache 42MB. CTOnews.com summarizes the specifications of Snapdragon X Elite as follows:

Specification CPUQualcomm Oryon CPU,64 bit architecture, 12 cores, up to 3.8 GHz, single-core and dual-core Boost, up to 4.3 GHzGPUQualcomm Adreno GPU,4.6 TFLOPs, support DX12NPUQualcomm Hexagon NPU,45 TOPs memory LPDDR5x,8533 MT/s rate, up to 64GB DX12NPUQualcomm Hexagon NPU,45 TOPs 136GB/s bandwidth, 8-channel storage SD v3.0, PCIe Gen 4 NVMe, UFS 4.0 node 4nm display Qualcomm Adreno DPU, up to UHD 120Hz, support HDR10 connection to Snapdragon X65 5G modem, 10 Gbps speed Support for Wi-Fi 7, low power Bluetooth 5.4

Other AV1 encodings, 4K HDR video decoding, lossless sound with Snapdragon Sound Tech Suite, AI generation on devices with 30 tokens per second, and "enterprise" security does not support Lightning 4 or 5, but it supports up to 3 USB 4.0 and 2 USB 3.2 Gen 2 and 1 eUSB2. With DP1.4, it can support up to three 4K UHD monitors (60Hz) or two 5K monitors.

For comparison, Microsoft's Xbox Series S has a computing power of only 4 TFlops (Series X is 12.15 TFlops).

Cristiano Amon, CEO of Qualcomm, says it is better at single-threading performance than Apple's 12-core M2 Max and Intel 14-core Core i7-1355U.

According to reports, Qualcomm said that Snapdragon X Elite is better than Apple M2 Max in single-thread performance and can achieve its peak performance with 30% lower power consumption.

On the multi-core side, Qualcomm claims that its peak performance is 50% faster than Apple's M2 processor. Of course, X Elite has 50% more cores than M2 and consumes much more power, so its "peak multithreading performance" on Geekbench will certainly perform better.

In some charts, Qualcomm claims that the X Elite can achieve up to twice the performance of Intel Core i7-1355U (10 cores) and much better than Core i7-1360P (12 cores).

In addition, Qualcomm even says it is 60% faster than Intel's 13th-generation Core i7-13800H (14-core) standard compression processor (based on GeekBench 6.1), can even beat i9-13980HX in single-threaded performance, and consumes 70% less power than i9-13980HX at peak performance.

In terms of GPU, Qualcomm says it is twice as fast as the Intel Iris Xe in the i7-13800H, has only the power consumption of its 1amp 4, and is even expected to achieve an 80 per cent performance improvement at 1/5 of the power consumption of the AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS kernel display.

On the NPU side, Qualcomm says it aims to usher in a new era of localized AI processing and will be an important driver of Windows 12 (2024).

Qualcomm said the new Hexagon NPU can provide up to 45 TOP (terabytes per second) of computing power and can run generative AI LLM (large language models) with more than 13B parameters on the device at "amazing speed".

As you have guessed, since Snapdragon X has a "Elite" version, there will naturally be a regular version. Qualcomm expects laptops with Snapdragon X Elite chips to be available in mid-2024, including Microsoft, Lenovo, Dell and Hewlett-Packard.

Qualcomm also admits that the Elite series is just one of many versions the company plans to release in the next few years, hitting different PC segments at different prices in order to better compete with Intel and AMD.

In fact, Qualcomm said in its keynote speech that Oryon is not only suitable for Windows laptops, but will also "enter the fields of smartphones, cars, XR devices and so on in the future".
