CTOnews.com, Oct. 25 (Reuters)-Lael Brainard, director of the National Economic Council, announced today that Apple will provide the same commitment as California's maintenance Rights Act to "provide parts, tools and documentation" to independent maintenance businesses and consumers.

"this means that whether you are in California, Maine or Michigan, Apple will provide you with the parts, tools and documentation needed to repair Apple products at a reasonable price, as required by California law," Brainard said.

CTOnews.com reported in August that Apple decided to support California's maintenance Rights Act, SB 244, which requires companies to provide consumers with tools to diagnose and repair consumer electronics and household appliances.

Governor Gavin Newsom of California signed into law SB 244 in October, which is more stringent than similar programs in New York, Colorado and Minnesota, requiring manufacturers to provide appropriate tools, parts, software and documentation within seven years of production for devices that sell for more than $100 (devices that sell for less than $100 only take three years).
