CTOnews.com October 24, Great Wall signed a memorandum of intent with EP Manufacturing Berhad (EPMB), a large listed Malaysian manufacturing group, on CKD assembly cooperation, marking the start of Great Wall's first CKD (Completely Knocked Down) project in the ASEAN region.

Note: CKD is a proprietary term for imported vehicle models in the form of full parts.

According to the memorandum of understanding signed by the two sides, EPMB will assemble the electric vehicles of Great Wall Motor locally, as well as its SUV, pickup trucks and other models. It is expected that in the next three months, the two sides will actively promote cooperation and strive to reach a clear agreement. After the agreement is reached, the cooperation will be launched in 2024, which will promote the development of Malaysia's automobile industry.

If the deal goes well, future Great Wall cars and parts will be assembled at EPMB's new all bulk (CKD) production plant in the Arroya HICOM Pegoh industrial park in Malacca.

The plant, operated by its subsidiary Peps-JV, received approval from the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) in July to manufacture and assemble energy efficient vehicles (EEV) as well as passenger and commercial electric vehicles. The new enterprise has invested more than 100 million ringgit (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 153 million yuan) and is expected to create about 1000 new jobs.

EPMB said that once the first phase of the facility is completed and operational, the new plant will be able to produce 30,000 vehicles a year. On the other hand, Great Wall expects the plant's vehicle production to gradually increase to 20,000 vehicles by 2028.
