As Chinese electric car brands continue to expand their presence in the European market, this has caught the attention of Porsche and Volkswagen chief designer Michael Mauer. BYD launched six models in one go, including the SEAL electric sedan and SEAL U, designed specifically for European customers. The SEAL electric car starts at 45,000 euros ($48,000) and has a range of 570 kilometers.

This summer, Weilai released its first smart electric station wagon, ET5 Touring, pointing to Porsche Tecon and BMW's upcoming i5 travel version.

With the emergence of new electric vehicles in China, the competitive landscape is rapidly changing. But Moore, Porsche's chief designer, thinks it's a good thing. "As a designer, I think it's actually a positive thing because it makes decision makers more open," Moore explains. "

Both Porsche and Volkswagen models are known for classic design. But in the current electronic age, new entrants such as Tesla and Chinese electric vehicles are taking market share away from traditional automakers.

BYD overtook VW as the best-selling passenger car maker in China earlier this year and continues to widen the gap.

Oliver Blume, chief executive of Porsche and Volkswagen, admitted in August that "Porsche's position can only be maintained by constant change." Porsche launched its all-electric Mission X supercar concept in June, which, as Bloom describes it, is "a technological beacon for the sports car of the future."
