Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Brother Black fly's left hand clue delivery! CTOnews.com, Oct. 24 (Reuters)-artificial intelligence chip giant Nvidia has begun to design a central processing unit (CPU) that runs Microsoft's Windows operating system and uses Arm technology. AMD also plans to make PC chips based on Arm, according to sources. The chips are expected to be available around 2025.

The move by Nvidia and AMD is part of Microsoft's push for chip companies to develop Arm-based processors for Windows PC. Microsoft's goal is to challenge Apple, which has developed its own Arm-based chips and has nearly doubled the market share of its Mac computers in the past three years.

That means Nvidia and AMD will join Qualcomm, which has been making Arm-based chips for laptops since 2016. Nvidia, AMD and Qualcomm may shake up Intel's long-dominant PC industry, but the industry is under increasing pressure from Apple.

Arm is a British chip design company whose technology has long been used in low-power devices such as smartphones. Arm chips have better battery life and performance, but are not compatible with the x86 architecture used by Intel and AMD, which poses challenges to software development.

Microsoft partnered with Qualcomm in 2016 to port the Windows operating system to the Arm architecture. Microsoft gave Qualcomm an exclusive agreement to allow other companies to enter the market until 2024, the source said. Microsoft also encourages chip manufacturers to add advanced artificial intelligence features when designing CPU to improve the performance of Windows software.

"Microsoft learned in the 1990s that they don't want to rely on Intel anymore, they don't want to rely on a single supplier," says Jay Goldberg Goldberger, chief executive of D2D Advisory, a financial and strategy consultancy. "if Arm really takes off in PC, they will never make Qualcomm the only supplier."

Nvidia, AMD, Qualcomm and Microsoft all declined to comment, while Intel did not respond.

CTOnews.com noted that Nvidia shares closed up 3.84 per cent, while Intel shares closed down 3.06 per cent and arm shares closed up 4.89 per cent.
