According to CTOnews.com news on October 24, Guo Mingyi recently issued a market research briefing, saying that he expects to purchase 2000-3000 units in 2023, accounting for 1.3% of global AI server shipments. Ting will purchase 18000-20,000 AI servers in 2024, accounting for 5%.

Guo Mingyi believes that the AI server purchased by Apple is mainly the Nvidia HGX H100 8-GPU, which is the most common for training and reasoning generation AI, and the B100 will be added in the purchase of chips in the fourth quarter of next year.

Calculated at $250000 (currently about 1.83 million yuan), the H100 is estimated to cost Apple $620 million to purchase AI servers in 2023 (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 4.538 billion yuan) and next year is expected to reach $4.75 billion (currently about 34.77 billion yuan).

But even if the supply of Nvidia AI chips slows down in 2024, Apple will still buy fewer AI servers than its competitors. Take Meta as an example, about 40,000 AI servers were purchased in 2024 alone. Not to mention that Meta already has far more AI servers than Apple by 2024.

Assuming that Apple does not provide services similar to cloud hosting (Cloud hosting service), it is not appropriate to compare Microsoft (about 8-100000 AI servers purchased in 2024) with Apple.

I believe that when training its AI large language model, Apple should prefer to purchase and build its own AI servers rather than virtual hosting services provided by other cloud service providers for security, privacy and design flexibility considerations.

Apple's AI infrastructure has less computing power than its main competitors, and better software development capabilities are needed to catch up with its competitors.

The above do not calculate other expenses (manpower costs, infrastructure operating expenses, etc.). Therefore, it is reasonable to estimate that Apple needs to invest at least billions of dollars a year in order to catch up with its competitors. If Apple is really willing to spend only $1 billion a year on developing generative AI, it doesn't matter if my research is wrong, but I'm really worried about Apple's generative AI career / service prospects.

I know someone will say that Apple can develop its own AI server chips to save AI server procurement costs. I also agree that this is a noteworthy trend, but it is still not visible at present.
