Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Jiayi for your clue delivery! CTOnews.com, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) for more than two millennia, traditional Chinese medicine has diagnosed diseases by observing the color and shape of people's tongues, and this method is now being enhanced through artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques.

A collaborative study between Iraqi and Australian researchers shows that a computer-assisted tongue diagnosis system can accurately identify 94% of diseases such as diabetes and kidney failure. This diagnosis method usually uses simple devices such as smartphones, which provides a very promising, cost-effective alternative to remote health monitoring.

Using USB webcams and computers, engineers at the Central University of Technology (MTU) and the University of South Australia (UniSA) in Baghdad took pictures of the tongues of 50 patients with diabetes, kidney failure and anemia and compared them with a database of 9000 tongue images. They used image processing technology to diagnose these diseases with 94% accuracy.

Ali Al-Naji, associate professor of MTU and UniSA, and colleagues have published a new paper that reviews advances in computer-aided disease diagnosis based on tongue color around the world. Associate Professor Al-Naji said: "thousands of years ago, traditional Chinese medicine pioneered the practice of detecting diseases by observing the tongue. Traditional medicine has also supported this approach, proving that the color, shape and thickness of the tongue can reveal signs of diabetes, liver problems, circulatory and digestive problems, and blood and heart disease. Now, new methods of diagnosing diseases based on the appearance of the tongue are being carried out remotely using artificial intelligence and cameras-even smartphones. Computerized tongue analysis has high accuracy and can help to diagnose diseases remotely in a safe, effective, simple, painless and economical way. This is particularly meaningful in the post-epidemic era, as people may not have easy access to medical centres. "

Usually, people with diabetes have yellow tongues, those with cancer have purple tongues, and their tongues are thick and greasy, while people with acute strokes have red and often skewed tongues.

CTOnews.com noted that a tongue image analysis of 135 COVID patients conducted in Ukraine in 2022 showed that 64% of mildly infected tongues were light pink, 62% of moderately infected tongues were red, and 99% of severely infected tongues were crimson. Previous studies using the tongue diagnosis system have also accurately diagnosed appendicitis, diabetes and thyroid disease.

Associate Professor Al-Naji said: "by changing the color of the tongue, more than a dozen diseases can be diagnosed with 80 per cent accuracy. In our study, we have achieved 94 per cent accuracy for three diseases, so this study has potential for further improvement."
