Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, October 23 (Xinhua)-- astronomers have found a 8 billion-year-old radio signal identified as FRB 20220610A, which lasted only one millisecond, but released energy equivalent to that released by the sun for 30 years, according to the science magazine Science.
According to CTOnews.com, fast radio storms are mysterious radio astronomical phenomena from outside the Milky way, and hundreds have been detected since they were first discovered in 2007. Since outbreaks last only a few milliseconds, it is difficult to determine their sources.
Dr Stuart Ryder, an astronomer and co-author of the study at Macquarie University in Australia, said in a statement that the FRB 20220610A burst was caused by the merger of two or three galaxies to form new stars. Some scientists believe that these explosions are caused by stellar explosions.
The FRB 20220610A was originally detected using the Australian SKA path detector (a radio telescope) in Western Australia. Astronomers then used a large Chilean telescope to "look for the source galaxy" and found that it was older and farther away than any FRB previously detected.
Scientists believe that FRB can be used to "weigh" the universe by measuring uncounted matter between galaxies. Ryan Shannon, co-author of the study, said: "if we add up the amount of normal matter in the universe-that is, atoms-we will find that more than half of the matter should be missing." "We think the missing material is hidden in the space between galaxies, but it may be too hot and too thin to be seen with normal technology," he said. " FRB can "perceive" ionized matter and "see" electrons, allowing scientists to "measure how much is between galaxies," Shannon said.
According to CNN, nearly 50 FRB have been traced back to their origin. "it's surprising that FRB is so common," Shannon said. "it shows that there is a lot of potential in this field."
