The FRB 20220610A was originally detected using the Australian SKA path detector (a radio telescope) in Western Australia. Astronomers then used a large Chilean telescope to "look for the source galaxy" and found that it was older and farther away than any FRB previously detected.

Scientists believe that FRB can be used to "weigh" the universe by measuring uncounted matter between galaxies. Ryan Shannon, co-author of the study, said: "if we add up the amount of normal matter in the universe-that is, atoms-we will find that more than half of the matter should be missing." "We think the missing material is hidden in the space between galaxies, but it may be too hot and too thin to be seen with normal technology," he said.
