Open source innovation is an important model to promote the development of software technology. In the field of AI, from the AI framework to the AI content generation model, open source is causing an upsurge. In the field of operating system, open source has always been the mainstream development path. Linux operating system and Android operating system derived from Linux kernel have widely occupied the market share of servers and mobile phones.

On October 21, 2023, Peking University and Tencent Research Institute jointly released the "ubiquitous operating system Open Source ecosystem Research report" (hereinafter referred to as the report) at the 2023 CCF China Open Source Conference, which is the first research achievement in the industry to further focus on the ubiquitous operating system open source ecology after the two sides jointly released the ubiquitous operating system practice and Prospect Research report last year.

Ubiquitous operating system, as an important direction of operating system development and evolution, covers basic platform operating systems such as desktop operating system, server operating system, mobile intelligent terminal operating system, embedded and Internet of things operating system, cloud operating system, and application scenario operating systems such as intelligent transportation operating system, smart city operating system, robot operating system, smart home operating system and so on. From the perspective of software supply chain, ubiquitous operating system is in the central position in software supply chain, which not only needs to connect upstream hardware, but also needs to support all kinds of downstream application software. it covers firmware, driver, kernel, network management software, data fusion and governance platform, platform software and so on.

In this report, the first panoramic view shows the current situation of open source of ubiquitous operating systems at home and abroad, and puts forward the construction framework and development suggestions of the open source ecosystem of ubiquitous operating systems. Chairman of the Chinese computer Society (CCF) and Academician Mei Hong of the Chinese Academy of Sciences pointed out that in recent years, the theory, technology and application of ubiquitous operating systems are showing a trend of vigorous development, and open source is an "innovation paradigm" agreed by industry and academia. Wang Huaimin, director of the CCF Open Source Development Committee and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, believes that the practice of open source innovation of ubiquitous operating systems in China is an important exploration to promote the high-level development of key software in our country.

At present, in addition to the international open source community, there are also many open source operating system communities in China, which have developed community version operating systems, such as openKylin, deepin, Loongnix, OpenCloudOS, OpenEuler, OpenHarmony, Anolis OS and so on. The community version operating system strives for clear copyright, compatibility and openness, leading technology and widely used. In addition to the open source community, some enterprises or universities also open source their own operating system products, such as XiUOS, TencentOS Server, TencetOS Tiny, to promote the product iteration and application promotion of the operating system.

More and more domestic enterprises or communities are continuing to expand their own R & D and production efforts. Whether it is the basic platform class or the application scene operating system, the open source cooperation mode and ecological construction will be an important breakthrough for its future development.
