Yang Le, Institute of Mathematics and Systems Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, was born in Nantong, Jiangsu Province on November 10, 1939. In 1962, he graduated from the Department of Mathematics of Peking University (six-year system). In the same year, he was admitted to the Institute of Mathematics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He studied under Professor Xiong Qinglai and stayed at home to work after graduation in 1966. He was elected as a member of the Department of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1980. He became director of the Institute of Mathematics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1987, became president of the Chinese Mathematical Society in 1992, founded the Morningside Mathematics Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1996, and became the first president of the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1998. He was vice chairman of the all-China Youth Federation, a member of the CPPCC National Committee and a member of the standing Committee of the China Association for Science and Technology.

Comrade Yang Le studied complex analysis and obtained accurate results on the total deficit of meromorphic functions and their derivatives, revealing the countability of deficient functions; in cooperation with Zhang Guanghou, he found a close relationship between the number of defective values of entire functions and meromorphic functions and the number of singular directions, gave the best estimate, and obtained the general and accurate deficit relationship of meromorphic functions when multiple values were involved. His outstanding achievement in the theory of value distribution was a representative work in which Chinese mathematics was famous all over the world at that time.
