CTOnews.com, October 22 (Xinhua)-- the Weber Space Telescope has discovered an unprecedented new feature in Jupiter's atmosphere-a high-speed jet (equatorial jet) more than 3000 miles (4800 km) wide, above the main cloud layer above Jupiter's equator, NASA announced.

"it surprised us," said Ricardo Hueso of the University of Bilbao Basque in Spain, the lead author of the paper describing the findings. "the haze we have been seeing in Jupiter's atmosphere now seems to be a clear feature, and we can track them as Jupiter rotates rapidly."

CTOnews.com learned from the NASA website that the newly discovered equatorial jet flies at about 320mph (515km / h), twice the sustained wind speed of a Category 5 hurricane on Earth. It lies about 25 miles (40 kilometers) above the clouds, in the lower stratosphere of Jupiter.

Leigh Fletcher, a team member at the University of Leicester in the UK, explained: "Jupiter's equatorial stratosphere has complex but repeatable wind and temperature patterns that are higher than the winds measured in clouds and haze at these wavelengths." "if the intensity of this new jet is related to the stratospheric oscillation mode, we may expect the jet to change greatly in the next two to four years."
