CTOnews.com, October 22 (Xinhua)-- Apple was caught off guard when other AI products such as the ChatGPT exploded, but the company is currently preparing measures and plans to develop AI features for its full range of devices.

Tim Cook had previously claimed that Apple had been working on building artificial intelligence technology for years, but Bloomberg Mark Mark Gurman made it clear in his latest Power On newsletter that this is not the case at all.

Last year, when OpenAI's ChatGPT took off like a rocket, Apple basically did nothing. They watched Google and Microsoft launch search engines and other products based on spanning AI, while Apple's only attention to AI was the improved autocorrect system in iOS 17.

"[Apple] is very anxious about this and internally thinks it was a considerable mistake," said one person familiar with the matter. " Apple executives were caught off guard by the sudden AI boom in the industry and have been trying to make up for lost opportunities since the end of last year.

As Gurman mentioned in July, the company has just created its own large language model, Ajax, and launched a chat robot called Apple GPT within the company, and the next step is to determine whether the technology can cope with competitors and how Apple will apply it to its products.

He also revealed that Apple senior vice presidents in charge of AI and software engineering, John Janandria (John Giannandrea) and Craig Federidge (Craig Federighi), are leading the work, and they are known in Cook's team as the "executive sponsors" of generative AI drive.

Eddie Cue, Apple's head of services, is also said to be involved. The trio now plan to spend about $1 billion a year on the cause (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 7.32 billion yuan).

Currently, Janandria is overseeing the underlying technical development of the new AI system, and his team is deeply revamping Siri to achieve this goal.

Gurman believes the smarter Siri assistant won't be ready until next year at the earliest, but there are still concerns within Apple about the technology, and it may take longer for Apple's AI feature to become popular in its product line.

At the same time, Federici's software engineering team is adding AI to iOS 18, and a command requires it to include features that run on the company's large language model (LLM), which uses large amounts of data to hone AI capabilities. It is said that these new features can further improve the ability of Siri and Messages applications to answer questions and self-supplement sentence patterns, similar to competitive products.

Apple's software engineering team is also considering integrating generative AI into development tools such as Xcode, which could help app developers write new App faster, in line with services such as Microsoft GitHub Copilot, so Apple can be said to be completely behind, or even more than a year behind.

In addition, the Cue team is trying to add AI to as many applications as possible. For example, the team is exploring adding new AI features to Apple Music, including automatic playlist generation (which Spotify has launched in partnership with OpenAI), as well as the company's productivity app.

Cue's team is said to be working on how to use generative AI to help users get a better experience in apps such as Pages. Similarly, Microsoft has introduced similar features for its Word and PowerPoint applications.

He also mentioned that Apple is also testing the generative AI function for internal customer service applications in its AppleCare division.

In addition, a key point in Apple's internal debate over spanning AI is whether to deploy spanning AI, whether to run entirely locally on the device, cloud-based settings, or somewhere in between.

It is well known that native native support on devices is undoubtedly the fastest way and helps protect privacy, but LLM in the cloud can achieve more advanced operations.

Gurman believes that Apple is likely to adopt a comprehensive approach, or a compromise: some functions are handled locally on the device, while some of the more advanced tasks are handled in the cloud.
