CTOnews.com, Oct. 22, Intel released a 8088 processor with a clock rate of 4.77 MHz in 1979 and was equipped with the first IBM PC two years later.

Although the micro 8088 board designed by Sergey Kiselev runs very slowly by modern standards, the 8088 processor is a legend in the eyes of retro computer enthusiasts, and it has recently appeared in the Book 8088 mini-laptop.

Historically, computers equipped with Intel 8088 chips came with proprietary BIOS firmware. However, developer Sergey Kiselev has been opening up BIOS for some 8088 devices over the past decade. Kiselev released stable version 1.0.0 this month and thought the code was stable enough.

The hardware officially supported by 8088 BIOS includes Kiselev's Micro 8088 IBM XT compatible board, NuXT board and Xi 8088 board. Version 1.0.0 also provides official support for Book 8088.

Book 8088 actually installs a pirated old version of Kiselev 8088 BIOS. CTOnews.com Note: the so-called pirated open source software refers to the failure to comply with the open source license terms: in this case, the maker of Book 8088 removed references to Kiselev and GPL licenses.

Book 8088 if you want to use the latest official version of 8088 BIOS on Book 8088, you need to visit Kiselev's Tindie store and pay $10 for a replacement BIOS chip. The chip conforms to the software version and the latest version of GPL, fixes many bugs in previous versions, and further enhances related functions.

Kiselev calls this version 1.0, but he says further improvements are needed, including adding technical documentation, finalizing extended keyboard support and adding a "beep if there is no video" feature.
