CTOnews.com, October 22 (Xinhua)-- recently, iFixit dismantled Quest 3 and found that the battery occupied almost all the internal space after the front panel was removed. This makes one wonder how much impact it will have on the weight of Quest 3 if the battery is removed from the display.

CTOnews.com noticed that some other headsets, such as Pico 4 and Quest Pro, put the battery in the rear headband rather than in the front headband, while the Apple Vision Pro used an external battery pack to remove the battery completely from the head. But how much impact would this actually have on the weight of Quest 3?

UploadVR contacted Shahram Mokhtari, iFixit's chief disassembly technician, who was in charge of the disassembly of Quest 3 and asked him to weigh the removed battery. He weighed it and replied that the battery was only 64 grams.

The Quest 3 weighs 397g without a mask and headband, which means the battery accounts for only 16% of that weight.

Of course, the 397-gram figure includes side arms and speakers, and users won't feel their weight in front of their faces. If you remove them, the number may be between 20% and 25%, which is still not very different.

The way to make the head appear lighter is to remove the computing hardware from it, but this is more complex from an engineering point of view, and may require a thick and expensive cable to connect the computing unit to the sensor and display. And this computing unit is almost certainly bigger and thicker than a mobile phone because it requires a larger battery and cooling fan to support the sustained high performance required by the XR. For example, the cell of Magic Leap 2 is like a pocket.

However, it is also possible to reduce the weight of the head display in other ways. For example, micro OLED is lighter than LCD panels because they have higher pixel density and do not require a separate backlight layer. In addition, while headers like the Quest 3 are optimized for peak performance, we may also see weight-optimized headers in the future, using down-frequency chips and lighter heat dissipation components, and may even one day have fanless designs.

Currently, thinner heads like the Quest 3 feel lighter, if not really lighter, because the weight is closer to the user's face.
