CTOnews.com, Oct. 22 (Xinhua)-- A Google Cloud Computing Engineering Director accused Google of sexism against her and retaliated after she protested, resulting in more than $1 million in compensation.

Tuyuan Pixabay, who identified the director as Ulku Rowe, accused Google of placing her in a lower-level and lower-paid position than her less experienced male colleagues in 2017, according to the Bloomberg legal website. She also claimed that she had missed a promotion opportunity because of a male colleague who was not as qualified as her.

On Friday, a jury in New York found that Google had indeed committed gender discrimination and ordered Google to pay Roy $1.15 million in punitive damages and mental damage. Roy had 23 years of work experience when she joined Google, and the lawsuit alleges that Google deliberately depressed her pay when it hired her, making it much lower than the salary of its male colleagues.

Nearly five years ago, about 20,000 Google employees organized a strike to change the company's handling of sexual harassment and discrimination. Although the company has promised to do better on sexual harassment, there are still many deficiencies in its response to discrimination. Roy's lawsuit is the first of its kind faced by Google since the protest, according to Bloomberg law.
