Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Xiao Zhan for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, October 20, according to Canalys official account, India shipped 43 million smartphones in the third quarter of 2023, and the related market is gradually recovering.

Canalys believes that although mobile phone shipments in India fell 3% year-on-year, the quarter witnessed an improvement in the consumer environment, providing an opportunity for manufacturers to launch new phones.

In the third quarter of 2023, Samsung maintained a leading position, accounting for 18% of the market share and shipping 7.9 million units.

Xiaomi rose to second place with the release of cost-effective 5G models, with a shipment of 7.6 million units.

Vivo ranked third with 7.2 million shipments.

Realme and OPPO (excluding one plus) stood firm in the top five, with shipments of 5.8 million and 4.4 million respectively.

Sanyam Chaurasia, a senior analyst at ▲ Tuyuan CanalysCanalys, said that in the third quarter, major smartphone brands targeted to promote their festival product portfolios in the Indian market, focusing on cost-effective 5G options, while major brands also launched their latest products one after another, taking full advantage of inventory improvements brought about by the vast majority of manufacturers in the quarter.

There has been a surge in demand for entry-level models in India as manufacturers launch 5G models for the mass market. For example, Xiaomi released Red Rice 125G and POCO M6 Pro 5G, enriching their 5G product choice and promoting the growth of its 5G product line. Realme has also attracted market attention with its 11x 5G and 11 5G models, especially through online channels.

As 5G smartphones become increasingly mainstream in the market, Motorola, Infinix and Tecno have also launched their price-friendly 5G devices to boost limited shipments.

On the other hand, the high-end market continues to grow steadily. Samsung's S23 series and Apple's iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 and other older models sold well during the holiday season, driving the development of the high-end market. Glory returned to the Indian market through cooperation with HTech and launched the Glory 90 series models.

▲ figure source Canalys but CTOnews.com found that Chaurasia also said that although shipments of the top five manufacturers all showed a year-on-year decline, other manufacturers showed resilience and overall market shipments were stable.

Brands such as OnePlus, Infinix, Tecno and Motorola have all achieved strong growth by expanding their channel layout, increasing product supply, and the positive momentum accumulated for manufacturers when they ran out of chips at the head of 2021.

In the current challenge, it is difficult for manufacturers to maintain market share, manage inventory and maintain profitability at the same time. For example, OPPO shifted its focus to higher-priced models, giving priority to profit margins over shipments.

Samsung has simplified its product portfolio in all price segments. Under the influence of the downward macro environment, local operational obstacles and demand fluctuations, manufacturers need to assess their position in the market. In order to achieve long-term development, leading manufacturers should give priority to establishing a strong distribution network, strengthen the integration with local production, and make positive contributions to the local economy.

Canalys claimed that although the recovery of consumer confidence in the second half of the year is good for the market, the road to recovery in India's mobile phone market will still face global macroeconomic challenges. Relevant market growth in 2024 will depend on "uncertain macroeconomic factors", especially at the entry level.

The Indian economy is still resilient to the impact of these changes, and brands are gradually adapting to market dynamics. In order to maintain market share, manufacturers should focus on reducing channel pressure and building a lean product portfolio. They should launch "star products" in all price ranges while maintaining a balanced inventory level in all channels.
