CTOnews.com, October 20 (Xinhua)-- Anthropic is an artificial intelligence company founded by the founder of OpenAI in 2021 and is famous for its chat robot Claude. Universal Music Group (UMG), along with ABKCO and Concord Publishing, filed an infringement lawsuit against Anthropic, accusing it of "illegally copying and distributing a large number of copyrighted works (including lyrics)" to create an AI model.

UMG pointed out that Anthropic's AI model and Claude 2 chatbot may provide "the same or almost the same" lyrics in all kinds of pop songs.

The plaintiff claimed: "even without special requirements, Anthropic's AI model will generate content containing the publisher's lyrics." For example, broader hints (writing a song about the death of Buddy Holly Buddy Holly or moving from Philadelphia to Belle Bel Air) led Claude to produce almost the same result as existing songs-in the case of Don McLean's "American Pie" and will Smith's "fresh Prince of Belle".

CTOnews.com noted that UMG pointed out that Anthropic "made a lot of money" by infringing the lyrics. In addition to fee-based services, the company has also received partnerships and investments from large companies. The lawsuit alleges that Amazon invested $4 billion in Anthropic in September, FTX bought a $500m stake before Anthropic collapsed, and Google and Zoom each contributed hundreds of millions more.

UMG seeks damages and legal fees from Anthropic, including compensation of up to $150000 per infringing work, accompanied by documents listing approximately 500 works, involving at least $75 million. The lawsuit also seeks statutory compensation of up to $25000 for each infringement, or the amount determined in the trial.

UMG also wants Anthropic to disclose its training data and methods, identify specific plagiarized lyrics, and destroy any copyrighted copies it still owns.
