CTOnews.com, October 20 (Xinhua)-- Google's antitrust case has become the largest monopoly of technology companies in American history since the 1990s. The Justice Department will drop the charges this week, indicating that the 10-week trial is halfway through.

Google will begin defending antitrust cases on October 26th, the key of which is to reach a 21-year deal with Apple. Google is likely to explain why it pays its competitors during the trial to ensure the use of its own search engine.

Bloomberg expects Judge Amit Mehta to rule until next year, but any solution to the case is expected to drag on for years, and if the Justice Department wins, a second trial could be held to determine remedies.

CTOnews.com note: over the past five weeks, Judge Mehta has heard a lot of analogies, such as comparing user search results to a destination to which there are many ways and entrances, while Google uses bribes to make sure it is the main channel.

Mehta himself admits that "the core of the case" depends in particular on a default agreement: Google's 21-year partnership with Apple.

When the agreement was first signed in 2002, Apple was allowed to use Google for free to support its Safari search. Over time, the agreement evolved into a share of revenue, and Google paid Apple a percentage of its advertising sales. The Justice Department quoted estimates that Google pays Apple between $4 billion and $7 billion a year, but the exact figure was not disclosed.
