CTOnews.com, October 19 (Xinhua)-- Japanese automakers Honda Motor, General Motors of the United States and self-driving technology company Cruise announced today that the three companies have signed a memorandum of understanding to set up a joint venture to provide self-driving ride-hailing services to users.

CTOnews.com Note: Cruise, a subsidiary of self-driving solutions founded in 2013, was acquired by General Motors in 2016. Headquartered in San Francisco, California, the company is arguably one of the most powerful autopilot design startups.

According to reports, the three parties plan to set up a joint venture in the first half of 2024 after obtaining regulatory approval, which is expected to provide self-driving taxi-hailing service in central Tokyo, Japan in early 2026.

The service will be provided through the Cruise Origin jointly developed by the three parties. The Cruise Origin is a six-seater model designed for driverless rides that will pick up passengers at designated locations and take them to their destination entirely by autopilot.

According to reports, the service will start with dozens of Cruise Origins and then expand to a fleet of 500 Cruise Origins. The three companies then plan to expand their services beyond downtown Tokyo.

It is worth mentioning that Cruise Origin plans to make its debut in Japan at the 2023 Japan Mobile Show at the Tokyo International Exhibition Center from October 28 to November 5, 2023.
