CTOnews.com, October 19 (Xinhua)-- in May this year, Samsung announced the acquisition of eMagin, an American OLED research and development company, to promote RGB OLEDoS technology to meet Apple's future extended reality (XR) head display needs.

Today, eMagin announced that it had completed its acquisition, and the company officially became a Samsung display subsidiary specializing in developing OLEDoS technology for XR devices. According to reports, the deal is an all-cash transaction with a value of about $218 million (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 1.596 billion yuan).

According to reports, Samsung bought eMagin to promote RGB OLEDoS technology to meet Apple's future extended reality (XR) head display screen needs.

RGB OLEDoS technology is a combination of semiconductor and OLED panel display technology, which can achieve ultra-high resolution in small size, and has the advantages of high brightness, high contrast, high PPI, fast response and low power consumption. It is mainly suitable for AR/VR devices.

Sony is currently a leader in the field of OLEDoS, using white organic light emitting material OLED as light source with red, green and blue filters to achieve display effect, and its technology still has a lot of room for improvement.

Samsung also has long-term plans for the development of the technology, which is expected to provide OLEDoS screens with resolutions of up to 3000ppi per inch and brightness 10000nit in 2024, but the ultimate goal of Samsung displays is to achieve OLEDoS screens with resolutions between 6000ppi and 7000ppi.

RGB OLEDoS's current technical challenge is to deposit sub-pixels densely together. EMagin develops direct patterning technology (dPd), which does not use color filters, and the company has its own silicon backplane technology.
