Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com After Bloomberg reported that Apple's iPhone 15 sales in China, one of its largest markets, were poor, Jeff Pu, an analyst at Haitong International Securities, confirmed the news and shared some information about the iPhone 16 series.
In a note to investors, Jeff Pu noted that demand for the iPhone 15 series was lower than demand for the iPhone 14 series in the same period last year. Among them, iPhone 15 Pro Max is the most popular model among consumers, followed by iPhone 15 Pro. As for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, demand is weaker and they are in ample supply in stores around the world.
In China, the iPhone faces stiff competition from Chinese smartphones, especially Huawei's recently launched Mate 60 series. Demand for Huawei's latest smartphones in China "far exceeded expectations," according to Pu.
For Apple, this is definitely a risk. China accounted for 22% of Apple's total iPhone shipments in the first half of 2023, making it one of Apple's most important regions. Assuming the iPhone's market share in the country drops by 4.5 percent, that would mean about 12 million lost iPhone sales in the country.
Meanwhile, iPhone sales remain strong in the U.S., and Apple is betting on increased interest in high-end smartphones in India and a "seasonal recovery" in Europe.
As for the iPhone 16 series, Jeff Pu shared some details about the iPhone 16 a few days ago. According to the analyst, next year's Pro models will feature a faster 5G modem, Wi-Fi 7 and a new 48 megapixel ultra-wide angle lens. In contrast, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will get some of the technologies introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro, such as Wi-Fi 6e.
Jeff Pu also said that Apple will not design a chip based on the weaker performance of the A17 Pro chip, but will provide the A18 series chip for the iPhone 16 series. Around the iPhone 15 Pro overheating problem, Pu believes this is due to the poor design of the A17 Pro chip, although it is manufactured under the 3 nm process, but it is not more powerful or more efficient than the previous generation chip.
More specifically, the A17 Pro chip manufactured by TSMC is based on a manufacturing process known as "N3B." This process was developed specifically for Apple chips, while the N3E process will be available to all TSMC customers and is not yet ready. However, the N3E will bring some improvements such as higher clock speeds and lower power consumption.
Therefore, Jeff Pu believes that Apple will build A18 and A18 Pro chips for the iPhone 16 series, both of which are based on N3E technology. CTOnews.com notes that there were rumors before the iPhone 15 Pro launch that Apple did not intend to use the N3B chip for a long time and would switch to the N3E in 2024.
Jeff Pu also talked about Apple Vision Pro, and his sources in Apple's supply chain revealed that the company expects shipments of the headset to be between 400,000 and 500,000 units in 2024, far below initial expectations. Even so, as interest in AR / VR devices continues to grow, Apple Vision could become a powerful platform in the future, especially after cheaper models are introduced.
