CTOnews.com, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) Microsoft's current CEO Nadella said in a recent interview that empathy is "the hardest skill to learn", but it is a driving force for career development, a necessary factor to improve employee performance index, and a driving force for innovation.

Empathy means being able to understand other people's emotional feelings and see things from their point of view. While most people may think this is a soft skill, Satya Satya Nadella, chief executive of Microsoft, does not think so.

In an interview with Axel Springer CEO Mathias Dpfner, Nadella said:

Empathy is not a soft skill. In fact, it's the hardest skill we can learn-to connect with the world, to connect with the people who are most important to us.

CTOnews.com Note: soft skill is a sociological term related to a person's EQ, personality, social etiquette, communication, language, personal habits, kindness and optimism and other interpersonal traits. Soft skills are the opposite of hard skills, which are a technical necessity for work and many other activities.

According to Business Insider, Nadella's child Zain Nadella died early last year of cerebral palsy caused by asphyxiation in the womb, and how raising disabled children reshaped his outlook on life.

Nadella's wife, Anu, gave up her construction career for her children and drove to and from Seattle for several treatments. "after going through these things, I began to reflect, and then realized what I had been ignoring before, which made me start to see the world through other people's eyes," Nadella said in an interview.

Nadella published Hit Refresh in 2017, which talks about empathy:

Second, we have the answer to an important question that I have been thinking about-we hope the reader will eventually benefit from all this? The answer is: the power of bringing "empathy" to daily work. I hope HitRefresh can inspire people to find more empathy in their lives.

This is a skill that my wife Anu gradually helped me learn when my severely disabled son was born in 21. It is this ability that shapes our enabling mission at Microsoft and affects our constant pursuit of unmet and undefined demands. And this is our ability as a community to create opportunities for all while continuing to move forward.
