CTOnews.com, Oct. 19, Microsoft has just released a new open source-based software platform designed to help developers and enterprises create, deploy and manage cloud-based applications. This platform is called Radius and comes from Microsoft's Azure incubator team.

In a blog post, Microsoft introduced the goals of Radius:

Radius is designed to adapt to, rather than destroy, existing development tasks and CI / CD pipelines, to help developers better understand all the components that make up their applications, and to handle platform configurations such as permissions, connection strings, and so on, to simplify their tasks. As a result, operators can ensure that all applications are deployed in accordance with organizational policies, and then use Radius to manage applications and their resources.

Microsoft gives an example of how Radius works with applications that use Mongo databases:

With Radius, developers can model Mongo resources in their applications and use their connection strings during the development and testing phases. When you need to deploy in a production environment, developers can exchange application resources simply by changing the application definition connection to a service such as Azure CosmosDB or AWS DocumentDB that has been preconfigured by the operator. In other words, changing the supporting infrastructure of an application in Radius no longer requires application code or configuration changes.

The first version of Radius will certainly support Microsoft's own Azure cloud platform, but it will also support private clouds and Amazon Web Services. In future versions of Radius, support for other cloud services, including Google Cloud, will be added. Microsoft also works with other companies such as BlackRock, Comcast and Millenium BCP to ensure that applications managed through Radius can collaborate with any cloud service.

CTOnews.com noted that Microsoft has also created a Radius GitHub page for developers, provided code and documentation, and has set up a Discord community channel that allows Radius developers to communicate with each other about the new platform.
