Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
IT House, Oct. 18 (Xinhua)-- despite social media CEO Linda Yakarino's claim that the platform's usage hit an all-time high this summer, a new report poured cold water on that claim, saying that X's usage has actually declined on both the web and mobile.
According to market intelligence firm Similarweb, global traffic on site X fell 14% in September from a year earlier, while traffic in the United States fell 19%. On US mobile devices, the number of monthly active users based on iOS and Android also fell 17.8 per cent from a year earlier.
Although the United States accounts for about 1/4 of X site traffic, website traffic has also declined in other countries, including the United Kingdom (- 11.6%), France (- 13.4%), Germany (- 17.9%) and Australia (- 17.5%).
According to the report, the use of X has also declined in terms of long-term trends. Comparing the first nine months of 2023 with the same period in 2022, Simiarweb found that X's website traffic fell 11.6% year-on-year in the United States and 7% globally. On mobile, the number of monthly active users in the United States also fell by 12.8% over the same period.
However, as of last month, Mr Musk, X's boss, had seen a 96 per cent year-on-year increase in personal page traffic on the platform, according to Similarweb.
IT House notes that the report also points to the decline in X traffic as part of a broader shift, as traffic from the top 100 social networks and online communities tracked by the company also fell 3.7% in September, with the exception of TikTok, which grew by 22.8% globally, while traffic on Facebook fell by 10.4%.
The same is true on mobile, where X's monthly active users fell 17.8 per cent in September, while Facebook and Instagram fell by 8 per cent and 3.7 per cent, respectively.
In addition, Similarweb's analysis deals with the decline in the importance of X in the news ecosystem, pointing out that three years ago, the New York Times received 3-4 per cent of traffic from X, but now it has fallen to less than 1 per cent. Part of the reason, of course, is that X, like other competitors such as Bluesky and Threads, has restricted links to the New York Times since August.
But in fact, the importance of X to news publishers has been exaggerated. A recent report by Nieman showed that the loss of traffic after NPR left X was "negligible"-traffic fell by only 1%, compared with less than 2% of total traffic in the past.
