CTOnews.com, Oct. 18, email Vade recently released a cyber security report for the third quarter of 2023, saying phishing cases increased by 173% month-on-month and malware increased by 110%.

Vade said a total of 493.2 million emails containing phishing were detected in the third quarter of 2023, up 173 per cent from 180.4 million in the second quarter of this year.

Phishing was active in August, sending more than 207.3 million phishing emails, almost double the number in July. September is the second most active month for phishing, with 172.6 million emails.

Vade also detected 125.7 million emails containing malware in the third quarter, up 110 percent from 60 million in the second quarter and a record 126.8 million in the fourth quarter of 2016.

Malware threats peaked in September (45.6 million), followed by August (45.5 million) and July (34.6 million).

In terms of industry, phishing attacks in cloud, social media and financial services have all increased significantly, to 127%, 125% and 121%, respectively. Government departments had the largest increase of 292%, while e-commerce and logistics also increased by 62%, only the Internet / telecommunications industry showed a decline (- 29%).

Overall, financial services account for the highest proportion of total phishing URL, followed by cloud, social media, e-commerce / logistics, Internet / telecom and government.
