Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
October 17 news, next month is the first anniversary of the release of ChatGPT. It can be said that since then, it has brought unstoppable growth momentum to OpenAI.
The AI chat robot has been a huge success this year, and Sam Altman, OpenAI's chief executive, said in a conversation with employees last week that the company expects annualised revenue of about $1.3 billion.
This achievement is remarkable: OpenAI's total revenue in 2022 was just $28 million. Almost 50 times revenue growth is a dream for any Silicon Valley start-up.
ChatGPT is billed as a superpower, whether it's novice programmers trying to quickly deal with JavaScript code or marketers planning creative activities. It is not surprising that OpenAI has achieved such rapid growth.
But now the hard times have come. Although OpenAI is allied with a recovering Microsoft, it faces multiple threats that must be taken seriously to maintain its rapid growth momentum.
The first is an external challenge: OpenAI needs to maintain its own moat, which is threatened with shrinking.
The moat is a common strategy adopted by technology companies to stop competitors. In fact, these companies build powerful moats by developing products that are difficult to replicate.
While OpenAI has gained a first-mover advantage by launching ChatGPT, a high-profile consumer-oriented app, competitors are also busy investing in their own versions that could gradually erode OpenAI's moat.
Google is one of the biggest threats to OpenAI. The search giant is about to launch its much-anticipated multimodal AI model, Gemini, which aims to compete with GPT-4, the basic model of ChatGPT, and is expected to be released this year.
At the same time, the open source community is busy developing an alternative AI model. The goal is to replicate the performance of commercial tools such as ChatGPT through its own version and make it available to users for free.
If Gemini or an open source version like GPT-4 can meet or exceed its performance, OpenAI may face an uphill struggle to maintain a user base of paid advanced services.
As for ChatGPT's "see, listen, speak" and other new features, it is not clear whether users see it as an important factor in changing the rules of the game, or just a gaudy gimmick.
Another key challenge facing OpenAI seems to come from itself.
Earlier, analysts said OpenAI had quietly revised the "core values" section of its recruitment page, removing the words "thoughtful" and emphasizing the importance of "AGI focus" and "Intense and scrappy".
While these changes seem to be minor adjustments in semantics, as startups are usually active and aggressive, this deliberate language shift is a worrying signal for OpenAI's priorities.
For regulators, this could mean that the ethical issues of AI development have been lowered by one or two levels of priority. That may not be well received, given the calls from lawmakers around the world this year to be cautious about the development of AI.
The issue is likely to reach its best point next month, as world leaders hold their first AI security summit in the UK. Putting security on the back burner may prove foolish.
