Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

At this time last year, the promotion of the 13th generation of Core was impressive. Like last year, Core 14 still does not change slots, and the chipset motherboards of both 600s and 700s are seamlessly compatible, which is undoubtedly a great benefit for DIY players and can save more budget if there is a need for an upgrade.

How does the new i9-14900K perform? Can it replace the 13th generation Core i9 as the new consumer processor overlord? CTOnews.com will bring you detailed testing.

Architecture introduction since Intel launched hybrid heterogeneous design on the 12th generation Courier, this solution has greatly improved both performance and energy efficiency. Core 14 generation i9 still uses a hybrid heterogeneous design of performance core (P core) and energy efficiency core (E core), and the micro-architecture of Raptor Cover Refresh is slightly modified on the basis of the 13th generation. The maximum Rui frequency of the energy core and the performance core keeps the 4.4GHz and 5.6GHz unchanged, but increases their maximum overclocking frequency, that is, 6GHz. L2 and L3 caches are still 32MB and 36MB.

Intel also optimized its multithreading capabilities this time, improving multithreading performance by 18%. For gamers, Intel has improved the performance experience of the CPU-dependent parts of the game through thread manager and architecture optimization, as well as lower latency connections, or improved overclocking capabilities, and has launched a dedicated optimization technology for game performance, the application optimizer. It is also through the optimization of thread scheduling to further extract the improvement of game performance, which we will test later.

This time, the first product models of Core 14 generation are i5-14600K Magi i7-14700K, i9-14900K and the corresponding non-nuclear F version.

The 700 series chipset motherboard has been compatible with the chipset platform since the 13th generation of the chipset motherboard. Last year, due to the addition of many new features to the 700 chipset, users who pursue one step in place will naturally give priority to the new 700 chipset. But this year, 700 chipset and 600 chipset motherboards are old and strong, regardless of performance characteristics and prices are relatively mature, consumers do not have to worry about concurrent, adaptation and short-term price fluctuations, just choose the motherboard according to their own budget and actual needs. However, based on the actual testing requirements, we use the gigabyte XZ790 AORUS ELITE X WIFI7 motherboard as one of the hardware test platforms.

Since the chipset has not been changed, then CPU pins are naturally still LGA1700, matching radiators and fasteners and other spare parts are also completely universal, old users can seamlessly replace the chip.

The Gigabit carving X Z790 AORUS ELITE X WIFI7 motherboard uses 16 "1" 2 items of power supply, and the power supply specifications are adequate, whether it is i5-14600K or i9-14900K. The 2-ounce copper PCB features a low-loss design that reduces loss by up to 56%, making the CPU more stable.

Core 14 further optimizes the overclocking performance of DDR5 memory. The DDR5 XMP can exceed the 8000MT/s speed, while the gigabyte XZ790 AORUS ELITE X WIFI7 motherboard provides four DDR5 memory slots, which can exceed the 8200+MT/s memory frequency, perfect for CPU capabilities. A complete set of memory optimization technologies are also provided in the motherboard BIOS, such as DDR5 automatic overclocking, high bandwidth and low latency technology. Xiaobai can also quickly and significantly improve memory performance through one-click configuration, saving time and effort.

On the PCIe and M.2 solid-state slots, the gigabyte XZ790 AORUS ELITE X WIFI7 motherboard is also luxurious. One PCIe5.0 x16 and two PCIe4.0 x16 PCIe slots are designed with ultra-durable reinforcement, with a separate PCIe4.0 M.2 slot with a load-bearing capacity up to 58kg below the CPU area, covered with ultra-thick heat sink at the top. There are also 3 side-by-side M.2 slots, which are covered with super-large quick-detachable heat dissipation baffle, which is easy to disassemble and install, and there is no pressure in the later stage.

The specially optimized back drilling technology on the back of the gigabit X Z790 AORUS ELITE X WIFI7 motherboard can reduce signal reflection and timing problems and enhance the signal integrity of high-speed PCB, thereby improving system performance and hardware reliability.

In terms of interface, gigabyte XZ790 AORUS ELITE X WIFI7 motherboard provides a wealth of interface configurations, including Wi-Fi7 wireless network, 2.5G gigabit network interface, USB 3.2 Gen2*2 interface, etc., which can give full play to the peripheral configuration capabilities of Core 14 generation.

In order to better demonstrate the performance of i9-14900K, our test platform will try to fill up all the configurations that can be filled up. The specific configuration is as follows. This set of configurations should not constitute a bottleneck for i9.

Performance test i9-14900K is equipped with 24 cores and 32 threads, including 8 high-performance P cores and 16 energy-efficient E cores. Open CPU-Z to view more specific parameter information. The basic TDP of i9-14900K is 125W, L2 cache is 32MB, L3 cache is 36MB, which is consistent with the previous generation. The highest frequency range of P performance core is 3.6-5.6GHz and E energy efficiency core has 2.4GHz frequency. Both cores support overclocking.

In the CPU-Z 's own running score test, i9-14900K scored 980.1 points in a single core and 17667 points in multiple cores, an increase of 8 per cent and 6 per cent respectively over the previous generation of i9-13900K.

In the test of CineBench R23, i9-14900K scored 2365 points for single core and 41975 points for multi-core.

On the 3D Mark CPU PROFILE running score, the maximum thread score of i9-14900K is 17848, and the single core score is 1347.

In addition to CPU itself, we have also tested memory performance. As mentioned earlier, Core 14 further optimizes the memory performance of DDR5, and the gigabyte XZ790 AORUS ELITE X WIFI7 motherboard used in this test also supports automatic overclocking and high bandwidth and low latency technology. Compared with another brand DDR5 motherboard used by CTOnews.com to evaluate the 13th generation Core i5-13600K, the score difference of the same memory stick is as follows. We can see that the speed of reading, writing and copying in the first line has increased by 37%, 30% and 35%, respectively, and the delay has been reduced from 86.5ns to 67.5 ns L3 delay has also reduced 2.3ns. Gigabyte's high-bandwidth and low-latency technology and automatic overclocking bring considerable improvement in memory performance.

The game testing session is a bit special this time. As mentioned earlier, Intel has launched an optimization technology for game performance, using the optimizer. It can further extract the improvement of game performance through the optimization of thread scheduling. At present, the two games supported by the application optimizer are "Rainbow 6: siege" and "Metro: leave", so these two games will be added to this test, and you can also focus on their performance. In addition, in order to reduce the impact of excessive high resolution on CPU performance testing, the following tests are carried out with 1080p high definition quality, and some games with parameter adjustments will be described separately.

First of all, test two online competitive games, as the V Society official recently carried out a comprehensive upgrade of the game "CS:GO", now referred to as CS2, the requirements for hardware are different, and the pressure on equipment performance is significantly increased, so the data of the old games are lack of comparative reference value. This time we use 1080p resolution + default image quality (high) to create a practice robot room, map selection of ancient relics, using Xbox own frame rate monitoring tool, the measured average number of frames is 391 frames.

In another competitive game, Rainbow 6: siege, we ran with our own benchmark tool, with an average frame rate of 714 frames and 528 Low frames.

The average frame rate of the previous generation of i9-13900K "Rainbow 6: siege" was 661 frames, and 1% Low frames were 491 frames.

Then there are several stand-alone games, with an average frame rate of 328 frames for i9-14900K and 238 frames for 1% Low frames in Tomb Raider: shadow.

The previous generation of i9-13900K Tomb Raider: shadow averaged 303 frames, while 1% Low frames were 210 frames.

The average frame number of "Wild Dart: redemption 2" i9-14900K is 202 frames, and 1% Low frames are 99 frames.

The previous generation of i9-13900K "Wild Dart: redemption 2" averaged 193 frames, while 1% Low frames were 91 frames.

The average number of frames in "Metro: leaving" i9-14900K is 180 frames, and 1% Low frames are 119 frames.

The previous generation of i9-13900K "Metro: leaving" averaged 153 frames, while 1% Low frames were 100 frames.

"Cyberpunk: 2077" i9-14900K uses 1080p super quality, with an average of 229 frames and 85 Low frames.

The previous generation of i9-13900K "Cyberpunk: 2077" averaged 211frames, while 1% Low frames were 77 frames.

Through the performance of the above game tests, the performance of i9-14900K is better than that of i9-13900K in stand-alone games, with an average frame increase of about 5% and 8%. We mentioned earlier that two games specifically optimized by Intel's performance optimizer, "Rainbow 6: siege" also increased by 8%, while "Metro: leave" increased by 17.6%.

Creative production next, we test the performance of productivity office and creative tools. First, PC Mark10 represents the overall performance. Its score is as high as 11094, which once again refreshes the test record of all PC in the CTOnews.com evaluation room. The scores of the three sub-items are all "plus one" in thousands of digits, and the office performance is very excellent.

In another software, CrossMark, which represents comprehensive office performance, our configuration scored 2745 points, an improvement of about 500 points compared to i9-13900K, and can run all daily office software smoothly.

In the CPU BenchMark of 3D rendering software V-Ray, i9-14900K reached a score of 28745, also an all-time high.

In the video clip test plug-ins PugetBench For Pr and Ae, i9-14900K also performed well: with a score of 1666 on Pr and 1658 on AE, this productivity performance is unbeatable on consumer computers, running most of the special effects and clips smoothly.

Officials claim that i9-14900K has improved its multi-threaded performance by up to 18%. From the actual productivity test, we can indeed see another breakthrough in multi-core performance, so the office efficiency of i9-14900K will undoubtedly be further improved.

AI overclocking before this part of the test, let's take a look at the performance of the oven stability and power consumption of i9-14900K. Naturally, the simulation limit pressure is to choose AIDA64's FPU single baking test. At one start button, the CPU temperature soars to 101 ℃ and directly hits the temperature wall. The instantaneous power consumption of CPU reaches 310W, and then decreases slowly. After 10 minutes, the power consumption is stable at 295W, and the temperature is still 100 ℃. At this time, the highest frequency of P core is 5.5GHz. The E core is kept in the whole-core 4.4GHz, although the power consumption does not continue to increase this time, but the heat dissipation pressure on water cooling is still very large.

In addition to the above routine performance and game tests, we have also simply tested the AI performance of i9-14900K with Stable Diffusion. After all, many creators have begun to create articles and pictures with the help of AI. Mainstream content platforms such as bilibili and Xiao Hongshu also have a lot of AI-generated works.

After installing Stable Diffusion, we open the matching AI drawing tool, select CPU rendering in the generation engine column, and keep the other default settings.

Then start the Stable Diffusion console, with the help of a 5GB training model, input three keywords in the way of a text graph, and generate an AI picture with a resolution of 512 to 512. By recording the time with its own clock, the AI image is generated and rendered in only 1 minute and 52 seconds.

Core 14 K series can also use its own intel Extreme Tuning Utility tools for custom overclocking, which is a good toy for enthusiasts. There are more options for the new version of the XTU tool, so as usual, let's try to see if we can improve the performance a little bit by overclocking with our own button.

Measured before overclocking using XTU's own BenchMark run score, the final score is 13833 points, after a key overclocking score increased to 14033 points, it seems that a little more performance can be optimized.

At the same time, the single-core and multi-core scores of CPU-Z before and after overclocking are also improved to some extent.

In addition, the intel Extreme Tuning Utility tool also provides a new function AI ASSIST (AI Assistant), which can intelligently detect the configuration, temperature and power consumption of the current device through AI, and intelligently give overclocking suggestions to help novice users who will not overclock easily set overclocking and enjoy stronger performance.

After clicking on the AI Assistant tab, it will automatically start the intelligent detection for 30 seconds, and then give the overclocking suggestion result. Users only need to click Apply to take effect.

After applying the overclocking advice provided by AI assistants, XTU BenchMark once again gave a new high of 14198 points, and CPU-Z scores continued to rise. For novice users, this feature is indeed very friendly, after all, who doesn't like to improve performance for free?

It is concluded that Core 14 is a regular upgrade, and the main improvement in performance lies in the improvement of main frequency, but there is no obvious difference in architecture and power consumption cache, so the test results are no longer as amazing as those of Core 12 and 13. However, with the continuous optimization of multithreading and system support, the multithreading performance of i9-14900K can still be improved by 18%, and the new application optimizer can also extract the multithreaded performance of specific games again, making the game frame count and experience better.

On the other hand, Core 14 has little change in interface and memory support, while it continues to improve in memory overclocking limit, Wi-Fi7 and other peripheral supporting technologies, which not only gives players more room to upgrade, but also reduces the cost of replacement. AI assistant function helps users to achieve processor overclocking more easily and worry-free, and get free performance improvement. All kinds of details are undoubtedly good for consumers. Overall, i9-14900K is still the king of consumer processors.
