CTOnews.com October 17, according to the Canadian National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Mitsubishi is considering bidding for Fujitsu's chip packaging subsidiary Shinko, interested in entering the semiconductor manufacturing field.

Sources say that Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway, which owns 8.3% of Mitsubishi, has set up a team to explore the possibility of entering the semiconductor back-end manufacturing process (closed testing).

Fujitsu has sold its 50 per cent stake in Shinko, which is worth about $2.6 billion at current market prices (CTOnews.com Note: about Rmb19.006 billion), according to sources. The acquisition attracted interest from global buy-out firms Bain Capital, KKR, Apollo Global Management and Japanese investment firms.

Other sources said Mitsubishi was planning a joint bid with one of the potential buyers and that these negotiations were at an early stage and that Mitsubishi had not yet decided on a partner.

A spokesman for Mitsubishi said the trading company had set up a department responsible for chips and materials in June and was looking for opportunities. However, the spokesman said he could not comment on individual transactions.

A Fujitsu spokesman said: "Yes, we are considering options to maximize the value of the independent business, but no decision has been made yet."

It is worth mentioning that semiconductor packaging is still the dominant area of Japan, and Shinko, Ibiden and Toppan Holdings are the main suppliers of the global chip supply chain.
