CTOnews.com, October 17 (Xinhua) Microsoft's Project Silica project can store data in a glass disk with a life span of up to 10, 000 years.

According to Microsoft Research, Project Silica is positioned as a sustainable storage solution that can store 7 TB of data in a palm-sized piece of glass, equivalent to about 1.75 million songs or about 3500 movies. Microsoft claims that each glass plate can keep 7 TB of data intact for 10, 000 years.

Ant Rowstron, deputy director of the laboratory at Microsoft Cambridge Research, said Project Silica is extremely attractive in dealing with the growing amount of data in human and cloud storage. Rowstron also gives you a brief introduction to the difference between it and traditional magnetic storage.

He pointed out that when using mechanical hard drives, Microsoft needs to "refresh" data every five years, while using tape storage "if brave enough" can be extended to a decade.

It is said that refreshing data in magnetic storage media is very troublesome, which is not only a waste of energy, but also may cause data damage. In contrast, glass storage has the characteristics of natural water resistance, electromagnetic pulse resistance, extreme temperature resistance and surface scratches, and can be stably preserved for thousands of years.

CTOnews.com noted that Microsoft also showed four steps to Project Silica data storage and retrieval, mainly involving four "labs":

Writing to the laboratory: short laser pulses record data inside the glass in the form of voxels (3D pixels)

Reading laboratory: reading data from a computer-controlled microscope

Decoding lab: use Azure AI to decode the read data into a computer-readable standard format

Library Lab: when requesting to call data, the robot in the library will get the corresponding storage fragment and insert it into the reader.
